Be a teacher.

“We are all teachers, or should be. Anyone who relays experience to another person is a teacher. Not to transmit your experience is to betray it.”
— Elie Wiesel.

THE LOWDOWN

Many years ago, after a crazy birthday party in a cottage in Ipswich, UK, we woke up to the delicious smell of bread. Someone very kind had gotten up early to make homemade bread! Hungover as we were, this girl also managed to teach us how to prepare, knead and bake bread at home, and we’ve been fascinated by bread making (and eating) ever since. A simple (if patient) act of teaching that’s changed our loaves (...couldn’t resist) and is something we now enjoy regularly.

To be a teacher you don’t need a diploma, it’s enough to be alive. Whether you are an engineer, a carpenter, a teddy bear surgeon or a pet food taster, you have something to teach, not just knowledge or skills, but your life experiences and personal interests. Stop for a second to think about all the stuff you’ve learnt, you’ll be amazed at the wealth of knowledge you hold! Keeping this to yourself would be a real waste. So, to complement last week’s booster, we propose that this week you share some of your knowledge with the wider world.

WHY IS IT GOOD?

  • Sharing your knowledge is an act of generosity, and as a result you’ll feel great!

  • Realising how much you know will give you a confidence boost.

  • You will be spending quality time with someone.

  • Your knowledge might trigger someone else’s curiosity and you might be opening a whole new world to them, for which they’ll always be grateful.

  • You can enjoy the rewards of teaching without the pressure and endless paperwork that school teachers have to endure.

  • You will remain in that person’s memory for years to come.

SOME IDEAS

You can teach anything, a practical skill or simply something you enjoy doing. Some ideas:

  • Teach your workmates how to juggle. If your boss struggles to see the point, explain how it increases grey matter while offering 3 juggling balls.

  • Teach someone how to change a tyre.

  • Teach a friend how to make their own cosmetics.

  • Teach your kids or any random child how to make their very own eco-friendly play dough.

  • Teach your dad how to throw a javelin.
